Welcome — what you'll need
Before you start, gather a few things: your Ledger® hardware device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or other Ledger model), a computer or smartphone, internet access, and a safe place to store the recovery phrase. This guide focuses on Ledger® Live — the app that manages accounts, sends/receives crypto, and updates your device.
Quick start — 6 easy steps
Download Ledger® Live from the official Ledger website. Choose the version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) or find the mobile app in the App Store / Google Play. Always verify you are on the official site to avoid scams: search for "Ledger Live official" or type the URL directly if you have it saved.
Unbox your Ledger device and connect it to your computer or phone. Follow the on-screen device instructions to power it on. You’ll set a PIN directly on the hardware device — not in Ledger® Live. Choosing a strong PIN prevents physical attackers from easily accessing your device.
If this is a new device, choose “Set up as new device” and write down the recovery phrase (24 words for most Ledger models). Keep the recovery phrase offline and never share it. If you are restoring an existing wallet, choose “Restore device” and enter the recovery phrase using the device's buttons.
Open Ledger® Live and go to Get Started
. The app will guide you to add the device and install apps on your Ledger hardware for each cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). These device apps enable secure signing of transactions on the hardware itself.
Once apps are installed on the device, add accounts in Ledger® Live for each crypto you want to manage. Ledger® Live will fetch and display balances, and let you send and receive funds. Always double-check addresses on the hardware screen before confirming a send.
Keep Ledger® Live and your device firmware up to date. Firmware updates patch security issues and add features. Remember: the only valid backup for your wallet is the recovery phrase you wrote down. Store it in a fireproof/waterproof place or a secure vault — never online or in photos.
Safety first — best practices
- Never share your recovery phrase. No legitimate service or support agent will ask for it.
- Verify the recipient address on your Ledger device screen before confirming transactions.
- Use a hardware PIN and enable device passphrase if you need an extra account split.
- Avoid installing third-party apps that claim to 'enhance' Ledger® Live — stick to official integrations.
Troubleshooting tips
If Ledger® Live doesn’t recognize your device, try a different USB cable or port. For mobile, ensure Bluetooth is enabled (for Nano X) and the app has permission to use Bluetooth. If you lose your device, recover using your recovery phrase on a new Ledger device or compatible wallet that supports BIP39/SLIP-0010 standards.
FAQ
Is my crypto safe if someone finds my device?
Yes — without the PIN and the recovery phrase, the device alone doesn't grant access. The PIN and recovery phrase protect your assets.
Can I use Ledger® Live with multiple devices?
Yes. You can connect multiple Ledger devices to the same Ledger® Live installation and manage their accounts separately.
